A new packaging method to prolong the self-life of oyster mushroom, Pleurotus ostreathus, was investigated. Various outer-packaging films such as high density polyethylene, low density polyethylene, linear low density polyethylene, polypropylene, and polyethylene, and inner packing materials such as recycled pulp pellets and sheet were tested. Recycled pulp pellets supplemented with functional materials such as grapefruit seed extract, yellow mud, and active carbon were effective for preventing the growth of hyphae on the surface of oyster mushroom. Combined packaging with polypropylene film and recycled pulp particle as outer and inner packaging materials was most effective for preventing the decrease of hardness, the weight loss of oyster mushroom. Effective storage periods of this packaging at 4¡É and 18¡É were 68 days and 21 days, respectively. It increased the self-life by four to five times, compared with simple packaging using linear low density polyethylene film.
